Take My Yoke Upon You

Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:29)

Although Jesus is our Shepherd, we are not naturally sheep-like. In this example, he has to compel us to become more sheep-like. In his compassion, he asks us to lay down the heavy load we are trying to carry. We are self-directed, self-willed and defiant. All of this causes us great pain and weariness. Jesus knows we need a yoke—but an easy one. Trust him, he says. Only he is gentle and lowly enough to guide us without oppression. Only he can lead us without burdens. We can trust him. Give up your solo effort.

1. How can you let Jesus direct you today?
2. Why can you trust Jesus? What does he say here that makes that a better choice than trusting yourself?
3. What would it be like to truly have rest for your soul, even in the midst of your work today?

Abstain From Evil

“Abstain from every form of evil.” (1 Thessalonians 5:22)

How seriously do we take sin? As seriously as the guardian of our souls, the Holy Spirit? The apostle warns us to stay away from *every form* of evil. Not just some. And not just the actual evil, but forms of it. Evil can masquerade as something less obvious. And it can seem less serious than other things. So, Paul’s warning here emphasizes the care we should take with ourselves. Make sure you’re staying away from the subtle evils that don’t seem so bad. The things that don’t seem to have consequences. The thought or deed you’re sure will just pass by without anyone noticing. Be constantly careful about what you let into your mind. Watch out for what you say. Or who you befriend. Or what you do with your spare time. Every form. Of evil.

1. Review your thoughts or casual comments from yesterday. Make a list of those things that are a form of evil—things that could develop into big evil.
2. What can you do today to better avoid those things?
3. What is your responsibility in avoiding evil? What do you have to do to make sure you’re recognizing and avoiding it?

He Set Me Apart

“But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and who called me by his grace…” (Galatians 1:15)

God owns our ministries. The work we do for him every day is his work. His agenda. His purposes. He set each of us apart before we were born. Then, at some point, he calls. He has work for us to do each day. His work. His agenda. And he will reveal it to us in ways we can understand, if only we are looking for him.

1. Do you think of yourself as called and set apart by God? If not, why not?
2. How do you view your daily plans? Are they yours, just to get through the day, doing your job?
3. How could you make room for God’s plans in your day? What could you do to consult with him and look for him to speak in ways you can understand?
